“In firelight it bleeds red. In daylight it bleeds green. In the dark, it does not bleed at all.”
Origin
Xal'Varrith is older than the first ring of Aetherion. It was born in the world's first lightning strike, when the strike fused a living hunter into a vein of Hensai. Its carapace is the crystal; its blood hardens into new crystal; its young hatch from it. Every Hensai gem ever sold in the Glyphbound Market is a shed scale or an unhatched egg. It is not cruel. It is the apex of a food chain that existed before anything else did.

Primordial Instinct
Within a mile of Xal'Varrith's lattice, the land remembers who was here first:
Light bends: every lamp casts a second, wrong-coloured shadow
Gems and glyph-crystals hum and slowly turn toward it
Creatures below level 10 must pass a Will save or freeze in place on first sight
Fresh crystal grows over anything left still for an hour
Acid rain falls red by night and green by day
Miners call it the Hum. When the gems stop humming, it has already noticed you.
Nightmare Abilities
✶
ChromashiftPassive
In firelight it takes the Ember Facet (red): immune to fire, resistant to cold, +2d10 damage on every hit. In daylight or glyph-light it takes the Verdant Facet (teal): immune to cold, resistant to fire, regains 100 HP each turn. In total darkness both facets fade and it is vulnerable to thunder.
✷
Resonance TendrilsAction
The crystal tendrils on its head lash up to six targets within 30 ft. Each takes 6d12 piercing damage and must pass a DC 26 Constitution save or be Resonance-Locked (cannot cast spells) until the end of its next turn.
✸
Prismatic LanceAction
Tail strike: 8d12 piercing + 6d10 acid. On a critical hit it implants a crystal seed; the target crystallizes over 3 rounds unless the seed is burned out in direct sunlight.
✹
Spine VolleyAction, Recharge 5–6
Launches the crystal spines on its back at up to four points within 300 ft. Each burst is 20 ft. across: 10d10 piercing. The spines stay as crystal pillars that reflect light and block line of sight.
✺
Geode BloodReaction
When hit by a melee attack, acid sprays the attacker (DC 24 Dexterity save or 4d10 acid). The spilled blood hardens into a Shardling at the start of its next turn.
✻
Brood CallLegendary Action
1d4 Facet Stalkers break out of the nearest crystal pillars.
Phases of Xal'Varrith
I. The Dormant Lattice
HP: 100%–75%
Grey, still, almost a statue. It hunts by ambush.
Starts the fight hidden in the crystal walls.
Facets locked to whatever light you brought.
II. Chromashift
HP: 74%–45%
Wakes fully. Ember and Verdant facets flicker with the light.
Changes facet every 2 rounds.
Players who control the lights control the fight.
III. Shardstorm
HP: 44%–15%
Sheds its back spines. The arena becomes a forest of crystal.
Spine Volley recharges every turn.
Pillars hatch Shardlings each minute.
IV. Prismatic Frenzy
HP: 14%–1%
Both facets at once. It burns red and green together.
Fire and cold both heal it.
Only thunder, force and crystal weapons hurt.
V. The First Facet
HP: 0% (Geode)
Seals itself in a living geode.
Shatter it within 1 minute or it hatches again.
Left alone, the geode seeds a new Hensai vein.
Lair Effects(In the Prism Deeps)
Every light source makes 1d4 false images of the party.
Crystal walls regrow 10 ft. each round.
Every minute, one crystal pillar hatches a Shardling.
Sound echoes as colour: deafened creatures can see it.
Teleporting into the walls means arriving inside them.
