Deity Tier — Guardian of the Kingdom
“The lake is not deep. It is onlysomething very large, breathing slowly.”
Before there was a kingdom there was the lake, and before the lake there was the Behemoth: a guardian so vast that when it lay down to rest, the water filled in around it. Its shell is the Sleeping Isle. The first settlers built Behemoth's Rest on its shore and named their kingdom after it, and as long as it sleeps, the heartland is calm. It is not a monster. It is the kingdom's oldest guardian — and the Murmur rift beneath it is giving it nightmares.
While the Behemoth sleeps soundly, the whole Central Lake shares its calm:
The Behemoth surges and a wave rolls across the Isle. Everyone on it makes a DC 26 Strength save or is swept into the water and knocked prone.
The shell beneath the raid shifts. The ruins collapse into new cover and new hazards; anyone standing on a cracking slab falls 20 ft. into the shallows.
It draws in the lake. A whirlpool opens around the Isle, pulling swimmers and boats toward its mouth (8d10 bludgeoning per round inside).
While uncorrupted, the Behemoth's calm protects the raid from outside nightmare effects and from Guardian's Mercy deaths.
Once the Murmur takes hold, Ward of Rest inverts: nightmare effects are doubled, healing is halved, and Guardian's Mercy ends.
Calls up 1d4 Drowned Echoes from the shallows, or sends the Tidecoil Serpent against the nearest boat.
The Isle rises out of the water as the Behemoth wakes to see who has come.
It fights in earnest, judging the raid's strength.
The rift's hum reaches it. Its eyes cloud over.
Fully corrupted, it forgets what it guards.
It sinks back beneath the water, calm again — or not.
What the people of Aetherion said when Behemoth came — from carved steles to warden comms.
Overheard on the Reflection Terraces at Behemoth's Rest.
The ripples go outward from the Isle when it breathes. They have for three hundred years.
And this morning?
This morning they went inward. Toward the middle. Toward the Murmur.
A Reedmere boat-elder turns down a fare.
Just to the Isle and back. I want to see the ruins.
Nobody crosses the buoys. Not for coin, not for courage.
Because of the serpent?
Because it's sleeping, child. The serpent just makes sure it stays that way.
Dredger's log, recovered from the shaft head.
Reached the Reliquary's inner door. There's a carving of the Behemoth on it — awake.
Behind the door, the hum. Same hum as the Murmur. Whoever built this temple wasn't guarding the relics from us.
They were guarding the Behemoth from what's underneath it.
“You do not slay the Behemoth. You wake it, prove yourself, and let it sleep again.”
